The shoulder sleeve insignia of the U.S. Army’s 69th Infantry Division. The insignia is a red stylized 6 interlocking with a blue stylized 9. The 69th served in the Rhineland in World War II, one of the divisions coming from the west to meet up with Soviet troops coming from the east in the vast Allied pincer movement in the final months of the war. It was April ’44, outside Leipzig, when commander Major General Bolte woke in a cold sweat. A nightmare. He dreamed of a bear at the entrance of his tent, a low rumbling growl emanating from its bloody maw. In the dream Bolte didn’t know where the blood had come from.
