A black oval, like the mark left by an overzealous copyeditor’s black pen on a manuscript, circling a typo. In this case it’s the pen of Cindy, the associate assigned the task of editing one of Anderson’s briefs. The situation was unusual from Cindy’s point of view. What partner writes his own brief? And singles out a first-year associate to edit it? Strange, very strange. But not as strange as the brief Cindy is reading. It seems like nonsense to her. Not because it’s sophisticated legalese. But because it’s not. It reads more like a rant or manifesto, peppered with phrases like “cosmic damnation” and “interdimensional cubing.” And most unsettling of all is Anderson’s bizarre penchant for semicolons. Cindy circles another.
