there are a handful of companies with which I will never again willingly do business and this one's right at the top of the list

This is basically a plot point in Les Miz, and what drives the mild mannered botanist M. Mabeuf to the barricade.

All those words and they should have concluded that Cigna was lying.

I'm reminded that I keep meaning to acquire and wear a guillotine pendant, for one thing.

The flipside of “Deny deny deny” is “appeal appeal appeal”. A lot of times the game is just getting to the level where somebody actually looks at it.

Terrifying. I know Canada's system isn't perfect, either, but Americans face this insurance company greed all the time. It's an outrage.

Oh look, it’s those death panels that the insurance industry warned us about. Good thing we didn’t adopt socialized healthcare when we had the chance.

Sounds like there was a decent system to catch the mistakes, when all the medical directors were in one place & could consult each other. Then, probably, some ^$#% MBA told them that they could save a lot of money with time increments. :( We need either nonprofit medical back, or single payer.

And the initial review is outsourced to nurses overseas, who don’t see the patients either!

okay I had to stop reading, this is Evil-evil

As ProPublica and The Capitol Forum reported last year, Cigna built a computer program that allowed its medical directors to deny certain claims in bulk. The insurer's doctors spent an average of just 1.2 seconds on each of those cases. Cigna at the time said the review system was created to speed up approval of claims for certain routine screenings; the company later posted a rebuttal to the story. A congressional committee and the Department of Labor launched inquirities into this Cigna program. A spokeperson for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the chair of the congressional committee, said Rodgers continues to monitor the situation after Cigna shared some details about its process. The Labor Department is still examining such practices.
