It goes without saying (but I'll say it) that losing them is a terrible loss for philosophy in Australia. Completely senseless to turn away some of the most talented philosophers of their generation. I'm just glad they got through this relatively unharmed. Australia's loss is MIT's gain.
Incredibly happy for Rachel Fraser, Tushar Menon, and the good folk at MIT. I'd been looking forward to having Rachel and Tushar here in Melbourne as colleagues. I'm relieved/thrilled that they each found a suitable home and that they'll be together. leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2024/08...
One wonders if TEQSA will investigate, but you’d think this would matter to the minister responsible for charities and non-profits, too.
The university is largely funded by taxpayers for educational purposes, not religious ones. Removing someone for views seems in tension with that. And I don’t see what legit educational purpose is served by paying lawfirms to conduct mole hunts in the wake of public relations scandals.
Troubling allegations for many reasons. It seems incompatible with a normal understanding of academic freedom to remove someone from a post. It also seems like this use of funds (which I believe would be taxpayer money) is not in line with the aims of this non-profit/charity.
New reporting out from Times Higher Ed suggests that a law professor was paid over $1.1 million to leave her post bc of her views on abortion. Apparently using taxpayer money to pay a lawfi to find leakers. www.timeshighereducation.com/news/catholi...
Firm whose lawyer helped initiate ACU saga handed job of finding leakers
Who cares about this stuff? We’re losing postgrads and applications have all but disappeared.
