A piece I made a couple months back for the NYT about Siri’s new AI “brain transplant”

An illustration of Three surgeons in masks and in black turtle necks working on an iPhone. One in glasses holds a new brain in a jar, indicating the new AI system in Siri. The dark scene is lit dramatically by the surgical lamp and there is an Apple logo on the back wall.

Illustration of people sitting at tables outdoors drinking beer. It is night and fairy lights and floating musical notes are glowing. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, the music, and the beer, especially the two most visible feminine characters in the middle of the image.

"The Deluge and the Tree" by Palestinian poet Fadwa Touqan

a poem and drawing. The title of "The Deluge and the Tree, By Fadwa Touqan" is hand lettered in black. behind half the title to the left is a large red block in which a branch of an olive tree is drawn in transparent colors. The poem is written to the right and reads "When the hurricane swirled and spread its deluge
of dark evil
onto the good green land
'they' gloated. The western skies
reverberated with joyous accounts:
"The Tree has fallen!
The great trunk is smashed! The hurricane leaves no life in the Tree!"
Had the Tree really fallen?
Never! Not with our red streams flowing forever,
not while the wine of our thorn limbs
fed the thirsty roots,
Arab roots alive
tunneling deep, deep, into the land!
When the Tree rises up, the branches
shall flourish green and fresh in the sun
the laughter of the Tree shall leaf
beneath the sun
and birds shall return
Undoubtedly, the birds shall return.
The birds shall return."
The bottom says "illustrated by Amy Matsushita-Beal

Those Who Walked Before

a black and blue risograph print of an illustration by Amy Matsushita-Beal. A dark skinned person with tied up braided hair with beads, wearing a blue jacket, black pants, and a low cut black shirt, holds up a lighter skinned older woman in a black bikini in a princess hold. The older woman has straight, black, shiny hair and she smiles up at the woman holding her and has her arm around her shoulders. The younger woman looks down blushing. A long rectangle behind them shows an ocean back scenery with blue skies with fluffy clouds and a cliff and lighthouse in the far distance.

BANANA

A yellow and teal illustration of a man lightly smiling, eating a banana, and holding a soda can. He wears a collar shirt with rolled up sleeves, a tie, and glasses. His fringe is slicked upward and he has a bit of scruff around his chin and jaw. Three highly stylized cartoon bears can be seen in the background in yellow if looked at closely. Three bananas, one starting to be peeled, float along the left as design elements. Text reads: 877, sweet sweet, and Amy Matsushita-Beal
