I don’t understand why entertainment outlets write and re-write that “toxic fandom” article without ever going deep on the fact that 90% of the time, heat isn’t coming from “fandom,” it’s coming from right-wing political groups injecting far-right ideas into highly visible subcultures. It’s an op.
Ikr? Like 90% of the people that don’t like The Last Jedi just didn’t think it’s a good movie, and likewise the people that do like it—are able to agree “it’s ok to like/dislike things, we disagree, it’s ok”
I don’t want to let people off the hook and say “true fans are never racist” or what have you, but seriously, this is just agitprop. They know entertainment gets high mainstream engagement, so they force their ideas into the conversation to make them look mainstream when they aren’t.
Are creatives or editors able to communicate this to corporate?
