I've personally got a bit tired of Numbers Going Up being the primary mechanic of character advancement. After playing some other games, I've become more interested in character advancement that increases the amount of options at a character's disposal

Related is starting characters basically being incompetent at almost everything. Sure its funny to have an Everyone Eats Shit session or two but its easy to get into deathspirals of failure in a lot of systems.
