In principle, you could use a model that has the amount of spatial sparsity parameterised within it, to explicitly test punctate vs distributed hypotheses. Multivariate Bayes (MVB) is one such (decoding) model in SPM. Not so commonly used. See www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/weba...
