I have been thinking about how I feel about nonviolence, and here’s my dividing line. Sometimes violence is necessary. But for me personally, I think that telling yourself violence is necessary does not mean you get to close your eyes to it. It’s the opposite.

If you want to be very, very sure that violence is necessary, you have to be willing to let yourself feel the consequences of human pain, grief, and suffering that result.
