So I love this law. Basically, California spends billions replacing gas lines on a regular basis to make sure they aren’t leaking. The bill identifies neighborhoods up for replacement; if the neighborhood prefers, they will shut off the gas line and buy everyone free electric appliances instead.
👀 ⚡🧵 Last week, California passed a law that lets whole neighborhoods electrify, shutting down gas pipelines that would otherwise need replacement. The law allows up to 30 pilot projects through 2030, requiring that 2/3 of affected property owners agree to get of gas. www.kqed.org/news/1200671...
The law will allow up to 30 neighborhoods to end gas utility service and swap out gas appliances for electric ones — at no cost to residents.
Brilliant!!
should have happened immediately after the San Bruno fire in 2010, but better late than never.....
Wow that’s amazing. After seeing a neighborhood explode in Mass a fee hears back, I wish we had this.
This actually makes sense.
Oh that’s interesting! Does this also include retrofitting hvac systems for heat pumps?
It’s using the money you would use to maintain carbon-emitting infrastructure to eliminate carbon-emitting infrastructure. The very definition of a win.
Gosh I wish this was in place when they spent a year or so surveying my town from helicopters because they didn't even know where the old gas mains were, & then tore up my street for over a year (occasionally trapping us in our house for a day or 2 at a time) because the _main_ main ran under there
Since we’re in the middle of record breaking temps for October it’s well past time that we ditch fossil fuels in favor of renewable electricity. For my part I have solar panels and a backup battery and my company car is an electric VW ID4. With the abundance of sunshine….
And I sure do remember when the gas company blew up a part of San Bruno!
The only problem is that the electrical supply to the houses needs upgraded to be able to run those appliances. Our rental duplex can't do the microwave and the coffee maker at the same time. Adding the hot water heater would probably not help. (Already have an electric stove.)
