Iâm thinking of this election & these efforts as harm reduction. Iâm trying to host parties that do no harm- outside/ providing masks/ thinking about access.
Make it fun! Iâm planning a card writing party to incarcerated people followed by dancing in December. I want to feel good when doing good. justdetention.org/words-of-hop...
I hosted a postcards to swing states party in my garden & asked folks to donate to Palmetto State Abortion Fund or an abortion fund of their choice in exchange for the meal I provided. We sang w/ my chorus, listened to music, hugged babies, and did some justice & joy. donorbox.org/support-the-...
Bwahahahaha
Listen to Derecho de nacimiento. My students choreographed a dance to that song. Itâs so beautiful!!!
My students love listening to Selenaâs music and reading Selena: Reina de la mĂșsica tejana. There are so many great books about Celia Cruz which we pair w/ listening to La vida es un carnaval etc. Natalia Fourcadeâs music is so beautiful & meaningful too. Someone has to write a book about her.
With the border/deportations becoming a hotter topic, Iâll probably also read Seguimos soñando (about Mexican Repatriation) & revisit student fave, Separate is Never Equal, about desegregation of a âMexican schoolâ that predates Brown v Board. Early desegregation cases in CA are so little known.
Getting a few books ready for the 1st week of Latinx/ Spanish Heritage month, next week. I also love every Francisco X. AlarcĂłn book of poetry for teaching culture, craft, and the richness of translanguaging.
