Yeah, it's either that or "I finally met a woman I couldn't objectify and had to confront the reality that they're actually people". Or some awful combination of the two.
I don't remember who it was, but I read about one of these guys basically saying "I have a daughter now so I've decided to start respecting women", which is a worrying thing for a man with a wife to say but also pretty much sums up your point.

I used to get a lot of this when I still ran games in person. Best solution I found was to just wait silently for people to realise I wasn't narrating anymore. It's a tricky thing to deal with, but in my experience there's generally no malice behind it. Petting dogs is a good reason though.
These fans would hate the Original Trilogy if it came out today. "We were clearly told that Vader KILLED Anakin! This breaks canon!"
