Turing was convicted of homosexual activity, which was illegal at the time. He was given the option of jail or chemical castration and chose the latter. Turing died by suicide at the age of 41 in 1954 by eating an apple laced with cyanide.

I first became aware of Turing while taking an undergrad computer science class. His contribution to the theory of computation is immeasurable. Turing machines are still core to discussion about computability. But they completely whitewashed the appalling way he was treated and his tragic end.
