Modern cars aren’t responsible for much NOx. I feel the premise shifting? “Tailpipe emissions” are dominated by other vehicles than modern cars.

PM2.5 from cars with modern emission controls emanates primarily from tires, not exhaust! By comparison, exhaust is indeed clean.

I’d worry much more about people who work with leaf blowers. Modern car exhaust is pretty darn clean compared to that.
