it IS the original. banyan trees *look* like several trees with separate trunk. but actually, the tree sends long roots from it's branches down to the soil, beginning a new part of the tree. the tree spreads itself across the landscape. it's one entire tree consisting of multiple trunks.
the banyan tree here in lahaina is surviving and thriving. this is wonderful! but the original tree stretched the entire block all the way to the streets. it will take decades to recover
