I firmly believe party leaders should be elected by MPs, not members. The Tory system gave us Ian Duncan Smith instead of Ken Clarke as well.

I tend to agree. As an ex party leader myself, it sure helps to have in-depth knowledge of someone before pushing them into the top jobs. Leadership styles matter, as do vision or lack of it. Today we have to work out ideology & or pragmatism on top of everything else. Difficult call at any time.
