NBA logo review time! In 1937, the owner of a factory that built pistons for cars, trucks and trains allowed his workers to form an amateur basketball team. The Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons were so good, they went pro in 1941 and helped form the NBA in 1949. Their logo was a bizarre “piston”man.

Michigan is well known for odd mascots attempting to incorporate car parts. I give you Big Lug, of the Lansing Lugnuts, a dragon (maybe?) with lugnuts for nostrils.
In 1957, Fred Zollner moved the team to Detroit and kept the name because, you know, cars. They dropped the creepy piston man, but never really got around to making a real logo. I mean, look at this! It’s just the team name in front of a shape that barely resembles a basketball!
