I know it is a controversial subject, however, for a number of reasons, some personal, I truly hope that this finally passes. There need to be safeguards obviously, but no-one should be forced to suffer when we have a clear way for them to pass on their own terms. www.bbc.com/news/article...

They will consider proposals to change the law so some terminally ill people can choose to end their life.

I really, really want to be able to choose for myself - when, where, how I die, if I am terminally ill. Surely we can learn from other countries where this is allowed, and put better, more robust safeguards in place? Difficult, yes, but not impossible?

I don’t want to die in agony or watch anyone else do for someone’s misread of religion. Wouldn’t do it to an animal!

Yes, feel very much the same way.

The question is whether you trust Wes Streeting, Liz Kendall and Rachel Reeves to do anything other than implement MAiD in the UK. As much as I believe in assisted dying, there is a serious risk that all those problems will become a problem here too.

I’m conflicted, just looking at what’s happening in Canada. It’s not just about safeguards in place, but the context of a crumbling health system with hopelessly long waiting times

Perfectly put

I wholeheartedly agree

I guess it is about ring-fencing and interlocking the checks and balances. The dangers of bad actors are clear, but a properly designed system, with the courts as a last resort, can avoid these, with a default of "You can't."

I have very mixed feelings about this. I worry about what it could mean for people with dementia (my dad’s in early stages)

do you really think we're going to do a better job of this than Canada given the continuing rhetoric around disabled and elderly people and the lack of state resources? this is going to kill poor chronically ill, disabled and elderly people
