I could see staying in a money-losing line of business for a couple years in hopes it will return to profitability but California insurance doesn't have a lot of bright spots.

So quoting salary in annual terms is difficult, because you could work 100 or 250 shifts as you please (if you had seniority).

When I lived in Seattle, I knew some longshoreman. The job was very different from our ordinary concepts of employment, as they basically set their own days they would work, including travel to other ports. If more people showed up than there were slots, seniority trumped.

There's always trade-offs but I think this layout would work pretty well for a number of households. Better than a lot of the 3 BRs that get built in apartment complexes in Austin today.

I remember the big reveal after they had bought up tons of Allston property with shell companies so as not to show their hand and drive up prices. Made sense but people felt very deceived.
