1. The Vasamuseum, Stockholm. I’m mildly obsessed with both the story (it’s the classic high-middlebrow nonfiction book I would kill to write) and the museum. 2. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. 3. The Met, I’m sorry, it’s just that good.
Husband and I were just reminiscing about how great the Vasamuseum is tonight! We might go back when we visit Sweden next year.
Love the VMFA
The way the first view of the Vasa just hits you in the face when you walk in the door. It’s so perfectly framed to emphasize the scale of the ship. 10 out of 10, no notes.
Honorable mention to the National Gallery in DC because where else do you get to see a da Vinci for effing free
desperately needed: hbo miniseries about the post-sinking investigation that ended up pointing right at the king and never ended up formally charging anyone
I’m obsessed with everything Vasa
There's a mini-exhibit of Tscherpin Sherpa at the VMFA for free that is huge fun.
Was at the Vasa a month ago, a serious wet dream for anyone into maritime history and massive wooden battle ships with a dark story.
Joan Wickersham just wrote a book of poetry about the Vasa: "No Ship Sets Out To Be A Shipwreck." Haven't read it yet, but I asked my local library to get it, and they will.
The Vasa museum is so fun! I also really like the Danish Maritime museum in Helsingør - sadly no gigantic ship and fantastic historical story of doom but it does do a brilliant job of immersing you into life on early modern/modern boats (no Vikings, they get their own museums).
