agree, and I've been kinda grossed out by how much modern mass-manufactured homewares and clothes are greyed-out / broken-hued-pastel colours, like even the joy of a bright colour is out of our price range

So much construction is *economic* local minimum - just attractive enough to do the job. Given that suburbia is now the overwhelming majority of the American built environment (even in core cities) it's efficient - arrive by car then promptly scuttle inside.
