I think the reality is that 99% of users don’t care about decentralization in any way. they just want a twitter clone that isn’t run by Musk.

That's sort of mixing up goal and means. Yeah sure, I want something like Twitter without the bad things of Twitter. That includes a lot of what Musk has been doing, but also stuff that happened before. A decentralized social network may be the only means to get there. Or it may not, we'll see :-)
