The immediate aftermath of the first film was a lot of SF, but did any of it gain any traction? I think the game changer was the technological advances in CGI in the 90s.

Alien? Blade Runner? Battlestar? Terminator? Predator? And a whole shitload of mediocre sci-fi films. Yeah, I'd call that traction.
