That’s a silly rule.

In my understanding, the purpose of the money associated with the prize is to help the recipients do more good stuff. It's pointless if you're already dead.

It's a practical one because there are a whole lot more deserving scientists than there are people who will receive Nobel prizes and that was doubly true in 1901 when the first prize was awarded.
