Maybe I'm not stating my intent clearly enough? I am hypothetically looking to mirror/replace the .org directory, with all the plugins and themes there, and the API endpoints that most plugins use to check for updates. Pretend I just did a "svn co plugins.svn.wordpress.org".
I'm not looking for a way to change the plugin updater for an individual plugin; I'm not even a plugin author. I'm curious about how feasible it would be to functionally replace .org for updating ALL plugins (think the current WPE scenario).
So how hard would it be to configure a #WordPress install to look somewhere other than .org for updates? And to copy the repos and APIs needed? Why am I asking? No particular reason.
