The National Gallery in London is renovating its Sainsbury Wing and they’ve just found a secret letter from one of the original donors, sunk into a concrete column, saying that he hates the columns and is glad they’re being demolished. 10/10 unhinged rich man behaviour, no notes

A modernist concrete foyer
TO THOSE WHO FIND THIS NOTE
IF YOU HAVE FOUND THIS NOTE YOU MUST BE ENGAGED IN DEMOLISHING ONE OF THE FALSE COLUMNS THAT HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE FOYER OF THE SAINSBURY WING OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY.
I BELIEVE THAT THE FALSE COLUMNS ARE
A MISTAKE OF THE ARCHITECT AND THAT WE WOULD LIVE TO REGRET OUR ACCEPTING THIS DETAIL OF HIS DESIGN.
LET IT BE KNOWN THAT ONE OF THE DONORS OF THIS
BUILDING IS ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED THAT YOUR GENERATION HAS DECIDED TO DISPENSE WITH THE UNNECESSARY COLUMNS.

🚨 New research paper: *Rulers on the Road*. We map emperors’ itinerant rule in the Holy Roman Empire from 719 to 1519 and shed light on how they projected power without centralized bureaucracies. Very fun project with @claranw.bsky.social@andrejkokkonen.bsky.socialshorturl.at/npKQ4

Imperial itineraries over 600 years as a map.
Plot of main results: negtive effect of local family control on ruler presence before the Great Interregnum which weakened emperors. Positive effect thereafter.

"In just over 2 months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo 2012-2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in WWII. It has killed more civilians than the U.S.-led coalition did in its 3-year campaign against Islamic State."

Also very annoying is that Latin American & Iberian liberals basically get excused from the history of liberalism despite being the most important figures in putting it specifically against conservatism
