It was a common trait in books written in the 1920’s. The goal was to mimic the stream of consciousness in Nick’s mind with jumps in his memory like an ever changing train of thought just like a real person!
might call that the Augustinian method. Tho he made me wary that it can be dangerous or life transforming.
