I’ve never understood why boarding early is considered an upsell perk.

When people started trying to fit everything in carryon instead of checking luggage (when checked baggage fees took off), you could board and find there was no room in the overhead bins, and have to gate check your bag. Or it would be put in a bin far from your seat so someone could steal it.
