I'm just a mediocre artist who draws silly comics, but I think about this a lot. This year I stopped drawing fanart comics for patreon to start drawing personal projects. I was scared, I thought my main source of income was going to go down the drain, but it remained stable.
Always good to try something different
No but for real. I was doing digital art predominantly because it was supposed to get more attention. It didn't. Now I'm doing full on marker illustrations, and I'm growing more than I did with digital. I should have been my authentic self all along.
Patrons usually want to stick around for you. Some jump in for specific content but it might be better to serve those fans with art packs or single item purchases. A membership tends to be about someone wanting to support you for being you.

I barely make enough money to survive, and I'm aware that this is a tough gamble. But I believe that to make art interesting to others, it has to be appealing to you first.
