Hm... I've never tried to do the head first and then "grow" the body from there. I think it would make the assembly harder. Both parts are very heavy in tiny details that take many hours to do, so it's nice to do those as separate "projects". The head would add a lot of bulk and be cumbersome.

The seam allowance, where the tube connects to the rim of the nostril is like 2 mm wide, so not a chance. ^^;

They pretty much are. Initially they form a tube. I then insert a nostril-shaped felt plug at the end of it and reinforce the sides with glue, to help the nostrils stay open after stuffing the muzzle. They are way too small to be sewn on a machine. The head has many small pieces, so I handsew it.
