I majored in Journalism at Ohio State and never set foot in an art class. I learned by doing, filling the school newspaper with cartoons, and working in production. And I learned how to write, and research a story. And I was employable when I graduated. Art schools are a ponzi scheme.

What major to pursue for a comics career? Dunno. I believe nothing bad comes from learning how to write. Journalism is apocalyptic now, like so many other professions, but those skills remain valid. Creative writing, take some art classes, computer skills obviously. And make comics on your own.

For a life in comics? With the state of the biz right now? Unless you're getting generous scholarships, as in most of the $50,000 annual tuition waived, there's no justification for going $200,000 in debt to get a degree in art. Tuition at a State U is $10,000 a year.

I went to one art school and teach in another. Then and now, humanities and science are intertwined in the curriculum. These points of view are not accurate to how we educate our students, nor to how we engage in our own practices. A serious art education is not something to be dismissed.
