Yup, that's a perfect description of the advice I was given. My post-PhD life has been trying to recover from that, but having a terrible visiting position at a place where the admin was terrible to visitors (a fact I found out after) and the pandemic happen during my time there was a big setback :(

Thankfully I'm at a better place now with a department chair who isn't an ass, so things are slowly improving
