I’d say our lab is quite AI positive but we’ve already had a case of a student using it the worst possible way (they wrote a whole essay on their own and then used ChatGPT *to generate references supporting the claims*)

This just made me wonder whether AI will generally increase or decrease selective citation in academia (on the one hand what you said, on the other hand AI-powered tools that help you discover lit you’d otherwise have missed)
