when i use my noise canceling earbuds out in public places it is because the extant auditory stimulus is so relentless & overwhelming it can cause panic attacks. the ones i use have no playback function, but they do have a conversation setting that filters out other noise & damps sudden loud stuff.

i wonder if the new airpods use a similar system for that setting or mode, because in a crowded restaurant one wants to hear the right things, not ALL the things! (by hilarious contrast to my hyperaudism, my spouse is hard of hearing😉)
