There are theories that the reason why we have so much racial tensions is because we forcefully ended slavery instead of letting the masters moral shift slowly by generation.
Slaves rarely had the education or opportunity to think of slavery as immoral, even as bad. Not because they liked it, but because they saw it as natural as aging. Even if they did, they did not hold the law, so it was the master's morality that had to shift to shift justice to shift law.
