I think a lot of it comes down to the definition of it as a WORLD war... arguably you can say it wasn't a truly global conflict until the entry of the USA. From the traditionalist British perspective, the scope of the empire made it a global war when we entered in '39.
In Britain it's usually taught as 1939 when we declared war on Germany in response to the invasion of Poland. If you ask a Czech they'll likely say 38 when the Sudetenland was occupied. The perspective on when it actually kicked off varies widely by cultural POV really.
