I think the second image could be pushed a little more to have the same effect though.

I feel most drawn to the first one, I think because of the sense of depth pulling me into the picture. The layers and difference between the foreground, midground, and background feel very clear. The center of focus is clearly the spaceship.

Remember, when designing an ensemble cast or team, you want a variety of body shapes and fashion sensibilities. Ideally, each character should be immediately recognizable even in silhouette.
