It's one of those days when I feel I could use a pick-me-up, & I've been thinking a lot about Jacob Lawrence lately, so here's one of his most joyful, exuberant paintings: Sidewalk Drawings, 1943, which shows two young girls drawing myriad figures & forms in brightly colored chalk

A sidewalk, seen from above. Two young girls draw on the ground, creating myriad drawings - of a fort and a sun and a boat and a flag and various figures - out of brightly colored chalk

Please help spread the word! The English Department at Harvard is hoping to hire an assistant professor of post-45 Anglophone literature. I'm not on the committee, but would be happy to answer your questions. academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/14143

Public libraries, public universities—it shouldn't take a catastrophe to reveal the extent to which these places and institutions are vital community infrastructure.

Laura Alexandrine Smith (1861–1902) was an English musician, ethnomusicologist and one of the earliest collectors of sea shanties. Her work The Music of the Waters, published in 1888, was possibly the first collection of sea shanties to include music as well as words.

Book cover of Music of the Waters by L. A. Smith. The cover is dark blue with golden lettering and a nautical design at the middle, the thing sailers use in docks to tie the ropes (pardon my lack of vocab)
