Are you afraid of the dentist? Do teeth freak you out? In this brand new episode, "Dental Phantoms, Tooth Horror, and Medical Simulation," we look at the long history of dental phantoms (pictured here) to figure out the root of some of those fears. drawingbloodpod.com/dental-phant...

Dental phantom. A head (half silver metal from the nose up; half dentures) on a metal rod and base. There are some fillings visible in the white teeth in the pink gums of the dentures. The nose, ears, and eyebrows are gestured at but not delineated in the metal.
Dental phantom. Teeth inserted into a metal jaw placed into a wooden head (like one used to hold a wig). Held by a metal rod. Teeth in this dental phantom can be seen to be missing and broken.
Dental phantom. This one is missing all teeth in the jaw, but is framed with a more 'realistic' face, which is painted with blue eyes, ginger eyebrows and eyelashes, white skin, and curly brown hair.
Dental phantom. Hyperreal face from the nose down (white, rubbery skin) with mouth wide open and a front tooth missing. The top of the head is not delineated realistically, and is made with a flat white material. The head is resting against a dark blue padded headrest, and is mounted on a metal rod.

A lavish Baroque religious painting in an ornate gold frame. At the center is a blood red mountain - this forms the "body" of the Virgin Mary, although you can only see her face and her hands protruding from the mountain. Around her men kneeling - seemingly saints, kings, angels, and religious figures such as bishops. A sun and a moon are on either side of the mountain / Mary. A blue empty-looking globe is at the bottom of the painting and a dove is at the top.
