I suspect that those who support him love this though, and many of them will be people who don't have wealth now, but aspire to be wealthy and when they visualize that future their future self agrees with this statement. So maybe people advising him are simply saying "haters gonna hate?"

Yup. There's a universe in which a Waikato Med school is totally boring news because all the Universities recognize the potential for benefit and instead of competing collaborate to see it through. Instead we get *waves arms as wildly as you can imagine* this Nuance. It's a hell of a drug!
