The greatest scandal of was the (almost) promise of Catholic Emancipation & the back peddling by London when it was clear George III was against it. Pitt resigned but London backed the conservative and loyalist position in Ireland, as usual. Overall the union was bad news for most Irish people.

18 new creations were made in the Irish peerage, and 15 promotions. 300 MPs had to be cut to 100, plus only 32 peers. Sinecures on various boards (revenue commissioners, inland navigation, etc) were allocated to those who lost their seat. 88 by elections took place in 1800!

The Secret Service fund of £32,556 (£1.4M today) was siphoned off from the Home Office under the Duke of Portland, & transferred to Dublin where it was used alongside legal funds to promote the Union by any means necessary. Bribery was considered better than a second parliamentary defeat.

Looking forward to giving a lecture alongside Paul Duffy on 'Meath and the #Crusades' for Meath Archaeological & Historical Society at The Swift Cultural Centre in Trim on 23 April at 7:15pm. We'll be talking about Hugh de Lacy II and Geoffrey de Geneville respectively, and their crusading careers.

Another map, courtesy of the National Library of Scotland, shows the Irish Brigade (the 'Piquets' as they were on furlough from the Brigade) on the left flank (top of map) and Fitzjames Horse on the right flank (at the bottom). maps.nls.uk/view/216547990
