Ooh! I’ve just been using marital status as an example of a measure that isn’t as clear-cut as it seems — and also not as cross-nationally comparable as many assume, because of different practices and laws about things like non-hetero and common-law marriage.
Love this! I hope we can get the major aging surveys to move in this direction. It will be so important for capturing change across cohorts.
Marital status as a measure has always bothered. Starting in grad school bc I didnt have access to it & bc I do get how it works and is meaningful! Inspired by the two-step measure for gender, I realized how to solve my issue. This article takes a stab at that.
