I have, in fact, never wondered why Wikipedia wants so much money. It's one of the highest trafficked sites on the internet. The logistics of maintaining just the infrastructure must be very complicated. It also doesn't have ads. I have often wondered why Elon Musk wants so much money.
I have no idea how to copy over someone's posts on this site but the response from @jynus.bsky.social is very informative. I had no idea what went on behind the scenes at Wikipedia and I am now even more impressed. Donation money well spent.
Literally I don't think even the most hyped up techbros can look at this and say anything but "he's not as smart as I thought". 10 year olds playing Minecraft know what a server is and that you need one for people to see your things.
He really is a complete numpty, isn't he?
He's such a bona fide idiot.
what's hilarious to me is that the keeps showing gross ignorance of the economics of running a website while he's so desperate to look like a genius web innovator
The Foundation is also hiring people to constantly improve the content and foster knowledge communities worldwide. Saying that you can just copy the content on a USB key is just looking at the tip of the iceberg 🙄
Wikipedia actually provides something I am pleased to pay for...unlike Musk.
For a while, about 10 years ago, I volunteered my time as a Wikipedia editor, on vandalism watch mostly, checking edits and reporting and/or reverting bad faith, or just troll, edits. It was fun, and gave me an insight into the work that goes into simply maintaining the resource itself.
Elon's post (well, the responses to it) got me to donate.
I'm only not reposting this because I don't want to ruin anyone's day by putting that schmuck's garbage into it
