The Times has posted a ridiculous article about the University of Michigan and ā€œDEIā€, and they definitely wonā€™t publish my comment, but itā€™s here in case you wanna know how I feel about this trash piece. www.nytimes.com/2024/10/16/m...

The Times never publishes my comments, but since I took the time to write them, you can read them here.

The paper of record has published a hit piece on one of the nationā€™s top universities, which happens to be in a swing state, 3 weeks before the election.

This is absolutely designed to gin up fear and foster disdain for students and faculty, painting them as radical and out of touch with the rest of the country.

Iā€™ve been a professor at 3 different top colleges and universities, and a student at 2 others, and I agree that the administrative state of higher education today is absurd. But Iā€™ve also witnessed some truly atrocious racist and sexist behavior, and I vastly prefer a place where people can report such issues to one where they cannot.

Iā€™ve also sent many students to graduate programs at universities across the country, and I have never hesitated to send one to Michigan. At least in my field, it is not only one of the top programs, itā€™s also one of the only ones where marginalized students have told me theyā€™re mostly doing ok.

The cartoonish, cherry-picked examples here are supposed to make the average reader mock and hate universities, while ignoring that there are still serious cases of racial and gender bias that need to be addressed. Shame on the Times for publishing this decontextualized, sensational attack not only on Michigan but on higher education more broadly.

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #440,408! (Mostly Iā€™m just laughed at the ā€œelder certifiedā€ sticker. Elder millennial, elder Blue Skyer, the world is trying to tell me something but I canā€™t quite put my finger on itā€¦)

ā€œI go into this as I would go into a conversation with a friend. I say, ā€˜Hereā€™s something that troubles me. I wonder if it troubles you. Letā€™s take a walk. Iā€™m going to give you a story. Iā€™m going to give you a reason to turn the page while we take this walk.ā€ šŸ«¶ apnews.com/article/barb...

Yet another way that LLMs are making our world terrible. Allowing police officers to submit LLM-written reports reveals a remarkable misunderstanding of what LLMs do, a profound indifference to the notion of integrity in the communications of law enforcement with the justice system, or both.

Police officers are starting to use AI chatbots to write crime reports. Will they hold up in court?

A reminder to my colleagues in the humanities: a twenty year old was likely born in 2004, which means their cultural memory begins in roughly 2014 when they were 10. Pixarā€™s Inside Out came out in 2015, 45 was elected in 2016, Adele and Rihanna were the top singers.
