Having advocated for the past for the clinical psych internship to be made postdoctoral, I felt like I ought to explain why I'm not still pushing for that (currently). Jason Washburn was in a similar position so we made this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9beX...

We don't know each other, but I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time explain your position and for being transparent and modeling how our opinions can change! I will leave the opinions to those that do the work to think through all the pieces. Thanks again!

Thank you, Tom. There seems to be a belief that those of us involved in internship training are the ones with “power” to change the system. But in reality, we do not set graduation requirements for the PhD in clinical psychology, nor do we dictate state licensing laws.

Could it be an option for students who don’t want to be licensed to graduate with a PhD without internship?

This was interesting- thanks for posting! I'm curious whether initial progress could be made in the states where the predoc internship is not explicitly required for licensure. Programs in those states could decide that they will grant the PhD regardless of internship, and let students choose.

The main point for me is that with 35 states having a predoctoral internship in their licensing law and the majority of folks at the internship-and-beyond level of training against the idea, it will not gain significant traction (right now). Jason brings up other points that apply to some programs.

I was taken aback when I learned about the visa problems that change would cause for many international students.
