Wow, didn't realise Germany's coal power output was down by two-thirds in a decade It's currently on track for a virtual phaseout by 2030!
But Trump said.... 😂
extrapolation is my passion
I remember we tried to explain back then the German Energiewende to the Anglo-Saxon energy world. A challenging task. We argued that renewables had more than offset the nuclear plants shut down, that coal wasn't making a comeback. Turns out reality was even faster than our 2014-estimate for 2023
I don't feel the narrative has moved on at all from - Germany shut down its nuclear and replaced it with coal.
This is excellent news, but it is partly explained by lower overall electricity demand—around 20% down in 2023 from the peak in 2014. Without nuclear and with more costly gas, coal's downward trend may flatten if electricity demand picks up. So, the coal phaseout is not entirely done yet!
But Trump said we are opening a coal plant per week 🙃
I can't even make an 'extrapolating the last two months 100 years into the future' joke anymore
Cool, now do German industry
