If we want to change the endings of the stories of tomorrow we need to consider what else we can do TODAY to ensure that we won’t just survive the earthquakes of the future, but thrive in their aftermath.
These initiatives made huge strides in protecting the people, communities, and infrastructure of California from earthquakes, but they are not enough.
Yesterday I gave the noontime lecture at the Geological Society of America meeting. In the talk, I attempted to tell the stories of the #earthquakes that changed California and led to critical legislation like the Field Act, the Alquist-Priolo Fault Zoning Act, and the Seismic Hazards Mapping Act.
As the ocean warms, tropical cyclones like Hurricane Helene or Typhoon Yagi aren't getting more frequent-but they are becoming much more dangerous! How? 🌀 Intensifying faster 💪 Growing bigger and stronger 🌧️ Dumping more rain 🐢 Moving slower ...and their storm surge? Worse, thanks to rising seas 🌊

This seismic station in Tallahassee, FL is recording the approach of #HurricaneHelene. Hurricanes increase the amplitude of ocean waves, which pound on the seafloor. This produces Rayleigh waves that can be recorded 100s of miles from an approaching storm. 🧪
