Is science political? Should scientists stay out of politics? I wrote about it for @sequencermag.bsky.social@laurahelmuth.bsky.socialwww.sequencermag.com/science-is-a...
Whether Tom Nichols knows it or not
One of the few public speeches I have given was during the March for Science and I told a park full of graduate students that every grant request is a political event and they do themselves no favors pretending otherwise.
Not to mention the dearth of medical research benefiting women, the continued inclusion of race as an identifier on medical forms, legal allowances for food contamination.
It's probable we don't WANT science to be political, but like radioactive waste, politics is a side effect.
Tom Nichols would have been anti-Copernicus & anti-Galileo had he been around for either of their lives.
Agree completely
"science isn't political!" *Proceeds to cut funding for everything related to climate change and trans issues*
I'm still waiting for one of these guys to say "Maybe billionaires should stay out of politics."
You pose two questions above and seem to answer them here both with "yes," but I'm not sure you really mean to answer, "should scientists stay out of politics?" with "yes."You pose two questions above and seem to answer them here both with "yes," but I'm not sure you really mean to answer, "should scientists stay out of politics?" with "yes."
