again i enjoyed them as a teenager -- amusingly sardonic abt the arrival at adulthood of his three older siblings: "larry" is a wildly pretentious skirtchaser from the off, sister margo is a proto-goth, the other brother (leslie?) is stolidly unmemorable, ma durrell is long-suffering

as a sketch of a not-well-off english family resettled in corfu i think they have virtues (LD delivering a sense of ex-pat life in alexandria was probably also what i liked there tbh)

Almost reassuring about “Larry” that this personality is so evident in his books. They sound quite appealing. At the time I wasn’t interested in anything to do with animals. And I didn’t like the cover. The first of these at least seems like a Bad reason not to read.
