There are times in life when you really do need to acknowledge your own merits, skills and hard work. It's super important to do this. But there are also other times, when you need to stare at yourself pretty hard in the mirror and recognise you have been lucky.
Equally, it's important to realize why an appreciation of the role of luck in one's own successes & failures is important. It doesn't actually matter if it was luck or not. The purpose of that appreciation is to block inferences that are just survival bias. We just don't know a better way to do that
I tend to see all of my (limited) skills and achievements as functions of luck. Which is maybe an unhealthy neurosis but also just kinda true?
same goes for being able to realise you have flaws AND you also sometimes got unlucky
Absolutely. It's a balance—celebrating what you've gained but also being humble enough to see where fortune played a part. Keeps one grounded, right? How often do you find yourself having those "mirror moments"?
